The South Korean military investigation reveals 29 cases of confidential document leaks involving cryptocurrency

ChainCatcher news reports that an investigation in South Korea into soldiers using military passwords as collateral for loans to purchase cryptocurrency has revealed 29 cases of leaking military secrets. Among them is a captain who "sent confidential documents" related to "special forces wartime missions." This captain sent the data to someone who then sent "cryptocurrency worth 48 million won (35,700 USD) in return."According to previous reports, South Korean prosecutors believe that at least three active-duty soldiers this year handed over "Level 3" military passwords and secret documents to loan sharks to invest in cryptocurrency or repay "crypto investment debts."Earlier this month, the South Korean Ministry of Defense revealed that a court sentenced a captain to probation and expelled him from the military.Several other soldiers are also suspected of similar behavior. Prosecutors have charged three "loan sharks," accusing them of accepting military secrets in exchange for illegal cash loans. The ensuing controversy led to lawmakers getting involved. Kang Dae-sik, a member of the ruling People Power Party and the National Defense Committee, compiled data from the Ministry of Defense. His office recently stated that this data shows that since 2021, proxy soldiers have leaked secrets on 29 different occasions. Among these, 6 cases were reported in 2021, 8 cases in both 2022 and 2023, and 7 cases reported by 2024. (TVChosun)
