On February 15, the Roam Certification System officially launched, a new feature of the Roam App designed to ensure the quality of the Roam WiFi network and incentivize active users in the ecosystem.

The Roam Certification System classifies WiFi networks and registered users based on reliability and participation. Certified networks and users will receive gold or blue badges, representing their high trustworthiness and contributions within the Roam ecosystem. By certifying outstanding contributors and high-quality WiFi nodes, Roam aims to create a transparent and secure network. The main advantages of the certification system are as follows:

  • Reliable WiFi Access ------ Users can easily identify and connect to high-quality WiFi nodes that have been vetted by the community. This community consensus-based certification system enhances users' trust in the network, ensuring that every connection is seamless and secure.
  • Clear Certification Rules ------ By establishing clear and fair certification rules, users and WiFi network providers are encouraged to actively participate in the verification process. This not only aims to improve the overall performance of the network but also to build a network environment supervised and maintained by community members.
  • Multiple Exclusive Rewards ------ Certified users and WiFi networks can receive various rewards such as Roam token airdrops and exclusive mystery boxes. Additionally, certification information will be displayed in the Roam App as an important identifier for users and network providers. This not only recognizes users' efforts in the verification process but also showcases their identity as significant contributors to the Roam network to other community members.

Roam Certification System: Standards for Certified WiFi and Certified Users

The Roam Certification System consists of two parts: Certified WiFi and Certified Users, both adopting a two-tier certification system with gold and blue badges. Users can check the certification status of their added Roam routing devices, WiFi nodes, and personal accounts by upgrading to the latest version of the Roam App.

1. Certified WiFi

WiFi nodes can receive certification based on their reliability and verification status. When a WiFi node receives a certification badge, it indicates that it has been verified by multiple certified users and meets specific performance standards. This visual badge will be displayed in the Roam App (see above), allowing users to confidently connect to these WiFi nodes for a smoother and more secure connection experience.

Gold Badge Certification ------ Roam Router WiFi

  • WiFi nodes operated by Roam routers
  • At least 3 certified users have verified through check-ins
  • Provides robust OpenRoaming network coverage
  • No suspicious activity records

Blue Badge Certification ------ Public or Private WiFi

  • Maintains high or medium WiFi health
  • At least 3 certified users have verified through check-ins
  • Provides reliable network coverage
  • No suspicious activity records

In the Roam network, WiFi health is categorized into 5 levels:

  1. OpenRoaming/Premium: This type of WiFi node has high signal quality and superior performance, allowing users to monitor in real-time, suitable for all Roam community WiFi nodes.
  2. High: This level indicates that users have connected to the WiFi node in the past two weeks.
  3. Medium: This level indicates that the WiFi node has been active within the last two months.
  4. Low: This level indicates that the WiFi node has not been active for two months or longer.
  5. Offline: Indicates that the WiFi network is offline.

As shown in the above image, users can see the status indicators in the information of the WiFi nodes they are connected to through the Roam App.

2. Certified Users

Roam users can also obtain gold or blue badge certifications. Receiving these certification badges indicates that the user is an active and contributing member of the Roam network. After obtaining the certification badge, users will have the opportunity to receive special rewards such as Roam token airdrops or mystery boxes.

Gold Badge Certification ------ Roam Router Miner Users

  • Registered users of Roam miners
  • Active within the past 12 months
  • No historical suspicious activity records
  • Accumulated at least 500 Roam Points (calculated based on the UTC 48-hour rule)

Blue Badge Certification ------ Roam App Registered Users

  • Active within the past 12 months
  • No historical suspicious activity records
  • Accumulated at least 500 Roam Points (calculated based on the UTC 48-hour rule)

Additionally, certified users checking in at any certified Wi-Fi will have the chance to receive special rewards.

Roam Certification System: Designed to Reward the Community

Roam co-founder YZ stated on X: "This (certification system) is intended to be a reward mechanism, not a punishment mechanism."

The Roam Certification System is a powerful tool designed to maintain a decentralized network that is both secure and high-performing by certifying eligible WiFi nodes and users. Whether as Roam miners, WiFi network providers, or registered users of the Roam App, this system enhances the user experience and provides corresponding rewards to every contributor. This is not just a simple certification process but a user reward mechanism, with its core design purpose being to reward the community, providing them with higher quality WiFi connections and creating more opportunities to earn Roam Points. To obtain certification, the basic requirement is to accumulate at least 500 Roam Points. Users can follow the official Roam platform and actively participate in community activities, such as the Consensus conference currently taking place in Hong Kong, where attendees can download the Roam App for free and receive eSIM data, while consistently checking in or adding WiFi nodes to accumulate more Roam Points.
