ChainCatcher news, Indian Home Minister Nityanand Rai stated in Parliament on Wednesday that there have been up to 92 cases of drug purchases using the dark web and cryptocurrency in India from 2020 to April 2024. Rai's response was to a question raised by opposition Congress MP Jose K. Mani regarding drug trafficking. One of the questions was, "Has the government noticed that technology and other online methods are increasingly being used in domestic drug trafficking?"

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is the principal agency for drug law enforcement, and it recorded 3 such dark web and cryptocurrency-related cases in 2020, 49 cases in 2021, 8 cases in 2022, 21 cases in 2023, and 11 cases as of April 2024. The data does not distinguish how many of the 92 cases were solely related to the dark web and how many were solely related to cryptocurrency in terms of transaction methods. During the same period, there were a total of 1,025 cases involving packages or courier services. Rai also stated that, in addition to other preventive measures, a special task force has been established to monitor such suspicious drug-related transactions.
