TON Developer Closed-Door Meeting Review: Exploring the Vast Possibilities of TON and Telegram
Author: Vivi, TON Foundation
Dear TON crypto enthusiasts, we have just concluded an exciting closed-door developer meeting in Shanghai. This conference was hosted by the TON Foundation and 518 Salon, with co-organizers TownSquare Labs, Kenetic, 3WW3 Africa-Asia Web3 Research Institute, and Tweetfi. During this remarkable closed-door developer meeting, participants engaged in in-depth discussions and sharing about the cutting-edge developments in the TON ecosystem and related technologies.
During the half-day meeting, several heavyweight guests from the TON ecosystem delivered speeches.
TON Ecosystem Development
Vivi from the TON Foundation gave the opening speech. Vivi pointed out that the native integration of TON with Telegram significantly reduces the learning curve for users and the development cycle for projects. Users can seamlessly access mini-programs and games in the TON ecosystem using the Telegram Wallet, while projects can reach their user base through a convenient and user-friendly interface. Telegram provides quality organic traffic for projects, and with the incentives of cryptocurrency, applications can achieve viral growth among users.
Vivi stated that the development of the TON blockchain is gradually entering the fast lane, with DAPPs, games, social, and AI projects emerging. International capital such as Pantera and Animoca has also participated in TON investments, with hundreds of projects and investment institutions involved in the TON ecosystem.
Last month, TON supported the native USDT stablecoin, and in just one month, circulation reached $300 million; at the same time, the TVL on TON grew by 100% within a month, exceeding $300 million. Currently, the daily active wallets on TON have reached 500k, while the monthly active users are close to 4M, which is a significant difference compared to other blockchain networks.
Recently, the ecological project Notcoin not only listed on various CEXs but also reached 35M active users in just a few months; the ecological game Catizen also reached 10M users. Over the past six months, quality communities such as TownSquare Labs, TON xFans, and TonVerse have gradually deepened their involvement in the TON ecosystem, bringing vitality and cohesion to the ecosystem. These achievements highlight the infinite potential of the TON & Telegram ecosystem.
TownSquare Labs: Building a Uniswap-like AMM on TON
Next, Maxwell delivered a speech titled "Build Uniswap-like AMM on TON from scratch." Maxwell is the founder of TownSquare Labs, which focuses on technical construction and infrastructure development for TON. TownSquare Labs is a deep partner of the TON Foundation, providing technical solutions for the TON blockchain and developers, and participating in the construction of official technical documentation and developer education.
Maxwell designed a DeFi protocol based on the TON contract model called the Ordrswap protocol from first principles, comparing the differences in architecture and interaction modes with Uniswap. Uniswap uses a centralized account structure, where all users' asset states are concentrated in a few contracts, while Ordrswap adopts a fully decentralized account structure, where each user has their own independent contract to maintain asset states, leading to a contract count that grows at O(3N) scale. Uniswap's interactions are atomic, while Ordrswap requires multiple transactions to complete asynchronously. This decentralized account structure of Ordrswap also brings challenges in atomicity and composability, making the consistency of intermediate states a key focus and difficulty in development. Maxwell emphasized the need to ensure transaction consistency and fairness at the protocol level in such a fully asynchronous environment.
Maxwell stated that in the highly asynchronous and concurrent environment of Ordrswap, traditional programming languages have limitations. He believes that TLA+ is more suitable for designing and verifying distributed systems, better addressing the challenges posed by concurrency and uncertainty. TLA+ is a formal language developed by Turing Award winner Leslie Lamport, widely used in mission-critical scenarios such as cloud services and hardware development, effectively capturing and avoiding complex issues like concurrency and synchronization. Compared to languages like FunC and Tact, TLA+ can model and reason about systems at a higher level of abstraction, making it very suitable for designing asynchronous systems. Maxwell believes the best practice is to first write specifications in TLA+ and then implement the specific business code. This approach can effectively control the complexity brought by concurrency and ensure the correctness and consistency of the protocol. He believes the industry should pay attention to the application of formal methods like TLA+ in cryptocurrency protocol design.
TownSquare Labs has initiated an experimental development process for the TON blockchain, using TLA+ specifications for early formal verification before developing actual business code. Max stated that this is a "community driven from day one" project, and the proposal of the project concept represents the beginning of this process, with the entire process and lifecycle being open and co-built by the community, allowing participation from both technical and non-technical backgrounds in this "Toy Dex" process, with hopes of ultimately developing it into a secure, high-quality, and impactful DeFi protocol.
Kenetic Capital: Thoughts on TON Layer 2 Architecture
Then, Liang, co-founder of TON xFans and chief researcher at Kenetic Capital, summarized the current blockchain scaling solutions, including L1 and L2 solutions. Common L1 scaling solutions include sharding, while L2 solutions include state channels, sidechains/subchains, and Rollups (Optimistic Rollup and ZK-Rollup). Different solutions weigh scalability, security, and decentralization.
Liang also pointed out that L2 architecture is equally applicable to TON, as it can reduce gas fees, providing lower costs for projects and users, while achieving higher throughput and performance, avoiding the slowdown of the entire chain by a single project. Most importantly, L2 solutions can promote ecosystem development: supporting seamless migration of Ethereum applications and lowering the developer learning curve.
Liang also developed a TRC404 protocol similar to Pandora, which will be applied to the TON Layer 2 scaling solution—Atlas Protocol—invested by Kenetic Capital.
3WW3: Huge Opportunities in Africa-Asia X TON & TG
Finally, Zoroo, co-founder of the 3WW3 Africa-Asia Web3 Research Institute, stated that the institute focuses on crypto ecosystem research in the Africa-Asia region, which has a population of 7 billion and represents a huge potential crypto user market. The local internet and smartphone penetration rates are high, but financial services are lagging, creating opportunities for cryptocurrency entry. The Chinese community has strong capabilities in the internet industry, which can be combined with the Africa-Asia market.
Zoroo also discussed the alignment of the Africa-Asia crypto market with Telegram from four perspectives:
Telegram has a large number of users from Africa-Asia countries, providing a good opportunity to aggregate these users and introduce them to Web3;
Telegram will become a channel for projects to break through traditional centralized exchanges, achieving massive user growth and true mass adoption;
Telegram * Africa-Asia provides a vast user base for Web3, overcoming the dilemma of Web3 projects lacking diverse users, making it a good platform for creating new scenarios in technology and finance;
Products in the UBI (Universal Basic Income) track provide references for Web3 projects on Telegram, as these products have characteristics of large traffic and lasting retention.
3WW3 has also incubated Yescoin, rapidly accumulating nearly ten million users on Telegram through innovative product experiences and community operations, covering over 200 countries and regions. This fully demonstrates Telegram's immense potential in introducing users from emerging markets in Africa-Asia to Web3.
This conference gathered numerous developers, practitioners, and investors in the Web3 field, and the enthusiasm exceeded our expectations. TON has become an undeniable gravitational field in the Web3 space, with a full house at the venue showcasing the vibrant energy that TON brings to crypto. The vision of TON is no longer a mere concept but is gradually materializing and expanding its boundaries as an ecological force.
Thank you to all the participants. Let us stay true to our original intention, carry this passion and consensus, and build a bright future for TON together!
