Thailand launches new "digital nomad" visa, allowing for an extended stay of nearly one year

ChainCatcher news, according to Cointelegraph, the Thai government has announced the launch of a new visa category for digital nomads and freelancers. Reportedly, this visa allows them to work in the country for nearly a year, but details regarding tax and income requirements remain unclear. In recent years, the country has become a hotspot for digital nomads, attracting cryptocurrency traders and developers.

It is reported that the Thai government has introduced a new Thai Destination Visa (DTV) for foreigners wishing to work while on holiday. The DTV costs $270 (10,000 Thai Baht) and is valid for five years. The stay duration for the DTV is 180 days, which can be extended for another 180 days for the same fee, allowing holders to work in Thailand for nearly 12 months each time. The visa stipulates that for those working remotely in Thailand, a support guarantee of at least approximately $13,650 (500,000 Thai Baht) must be provided for spouses and children.

However, the new DTV should not be confused with the Long-Term Resident (LTR) "Thailand Work" visa, which is often referred to as the digital nomad visa. The latter is more difficult to obtain and requires a minimum average personal annual income of $80,000 and health insurance coverage. Foreign professional workers must also sign an employment contract with a company that has a minimum total income of $150 million over the past three years.
