In February, when I saw Casey claiming to release the top 10 Genesis Runes, one of them was a red envelope rune for Asian degens, and the three words that floated through my mind were: really know how to play…

We Chinese people don’t know how much we love to give and grab red envelopes; during festivals, we say "wishing you wealth" countless times. Every Spring Festival holiday, the ageless god of songs can make you listen until you want to vomit. The most exaggerated was on New Year's Eve in 2017, when over 14 billion WeChat red envelopes were sent. Considering the population that doesn’t use WeChat, each compatriot sent an average of 10.

Personally, I think the four words "wishing you wealth," which are so cliché, might be the most sincere blessing in the world. Ask yourself, besides parents, counting siblings, how many people in the world truly wish for your wealth? If there are, you should cherish them. Most friends and relatives just hope you’re not too poor and don’t become a burden.

Let’s stop complaining about human relationships and get down to business: when it comes to memes, if "wishing you wealth" takes second place, who dares to claim the first? When it comes to love, even if red envelopes can’t compare to lovers, they definitely surpass spouses. Given this, I told the tech expert: let’s make a TG bot to send red envelopes with Runes.

The Runes red envelope project in OmnityNetwork is an external project; it wasn’t mentioned in meetings and was quietly conducted in a small, obscure group. The manpower investment was insufficient, and it was intermittent, only becoming somewhat usable before the halving. Then I heard that Casey wouldn’t release the top 10 Genesis Runes anymore, only putting out one UNCOMMON•GOODS, occupying the 0 position without any fuss, leaving me momentarily confused. I hesitated: maybe we should just forget it. But then I thought, we’ve already done it; it’s good to give the community something fun. Besides, wouldn’t it be a huge regret if the first meme was absent from Runes?

Casey once said that 99.99% of FT is garbage, implying that creating sincere and interesting garbage is better than most. Vitalik also feels the same: memes should be fun. Thus, the Runes red envelope continued to improve and enhance its features.

As the halving approached, I handed a stack of Bitcoin to the tech expert: go grab a Runes head for me! Through the screen, I could feel the expert's helplessness and sadness. Fortunately, the colleagues were merciful, and our little bit of money squeezed into the first block after the halving, permanently engraving the four big words on #431 Rune: "HOPE•YOU•GET•RICH"!

Wait, isn’t it "wishing you wealth"? I originally planned to use the pinyin GONG•XI•FAAA•CAI, but a colleague opposed it, and the reason was indisputable: even if red envelopes aren’t global, they are at least Eastern. Countries like South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore all have red envelope traditions; who can understand pinyin? The "wishing you wealth" rune descended, and red envelopes still need to wait for Omnity cross-chain. Of course, can you imagine grabbing red envelopes on Bitcoin L1, spending $5 and waiting an hour for each grab? Users want something convenient and easy to use; without adoption, what’s the use of decentralization? The Omnity Runes red envelope is an ICP application, fully controlled on-chain. Thanks to ICP, sending and grabbing red envelopes requires no wallet and no gas fees. Grabbing a red envelope takes about 2 seconds, slightly slower than WeChat red envelopes, mainly due to the message transmission between the Telegram server and the ICP chain.

Here, I kindly remind Bitcoin application developers: your carefully constructed Bitcoin L1 application will be easily crushed by L2 applications; if you don’t believe it, go try grabbing a red envelope. Don’t try to fight against planes and artillery with sticks; no matter how skilled you are, it won’t work. Quickly choose an L2 with a good technical foundation and strong ecological support; that’s the right path.

Finally, with cross-chain and applications ready, we started sending Runes red envelopes in the Omnity and Runes Chinese community groups on April 28. The response was unprecedentedly enthusiastic; in one word: it went crazy! On the first day, the bot created 1,200 ICP custodial wallets, with an average of 10 blockchain transactions per wallet. To be honest, this number was lower than I expected; later, I found out it was because everyone’s speed was just too fast. The next day, we upgraded the system, increasing the maximum number of red envelopes from 255 to 1,000, giving slower friends a chance to share the benefits.

Currently, the red envelope bot can only transfer Runes between ICP addresses, but it will soon support cross-chain transfers back to the Bitcoin network and integrate AMM DEX, supporting $ICP/Rune Swap. Thus, the easiest way to get Runes for free on the internet was born: no wallet or funds needed, just join the Telegram group to grab Runes red envelopes. If you need to transfer back to the Bitcoin network, just use the free Runes to exchange for some ICP to pay the cross-chain fees. Of course, in the future, Runes can be directly transferred to major Bitcoin L2s, so stay tuned.

Rune No. 431 "wishing you wealth," zero pre-mined, open mint for one month, probably ending around May 20. Friends who want to send red envelopes are advised to save a little for slow use. In less than three weeks, you’ll only be able to buy them on exchanges. Each red envelope can include a short text, including hyperlinks, similar to sending a tweet. So red envelopes not only enliven the atmosphere but also serve as effective and interesting marketing tools. Omnity wishes everyone a happy time sending and grabbing red envelopes 🧧🧧🧧

BTW, on May 9, the RunesAsia conference, co-hosted by OmnityNetwork, RunesFactory, Waterdrip Capital, Xverse - Bitcoin Wallet for Web3, and the Runes Chinese community, will be held in Hong Kong. It is located at the same venue as the Bitcoin Asia main conference, so if you want to meet and chat in Hong Kong.
