Japanese actresses seem glamorous, but it is already a highly competitive profession. Most actresses may not have a single work in a year. Moreover, with platforms like P Station and other online video sites taking away DVD customers, and with a constant influx of young girls entering the industry, today the vast majority of actresses face a sharp decline in job opportunities. It is no longer the high-paying profession it was 20 years ago, with average incomes only slightly higher than those of regular wage earners.

There is a common consensus among Japanese actresses— the more you are offered, the scarier it becomes. High salaries often mean unequal treatment. A certain actress once said, "On the day I received 200,000 yen (¥10,000), I thought I was going to die there." Eighty percent of an actress's salary is usually taken by the agency, and these agencies often induce or coerce actresses into signing various contracts, with high penalties for violations, leaving them at the mercy of the agency or the underworld.

Most actresses will fade from the scene after a few years; not only do they earn little, but they are also often required to take on some extreme roles. Except for a few successful transitions, like teacher Aoi Sora, over 90% of actresses are unable to find normal employment in society after retiring, and can only work in places like izakayas or become prostitutes. This unique industry in Japan is filled with cruelty and injustice, and many actresses endure tremendous pressure in the industry, with their rights often being violated.

To better support and help these actresses, the AVAV Foundation advocates for the establishment of the "Actress Relief Fund." We hope that through the operation of this foundation, we can provide necessary legal assistance, vocational training, psychological counseling, employment support, etc., to help actresses have more choices and pathways when facing difficulties. We also hope to change societal prejudices and discrimination against them through public education and policy advocacy, increasing understanding and sympathy for their plight.

We will collect public donations and corporate sponsorships to establish a fair and transparent fund to help actresses who have suffered from violence, abuse, or economic exploitation, providing legal assistance, psychological counseling, media support, and funding for the career transition and living needs of the affected actresses.

  • Invite professionals to provide legal assistance, psychological counseling, career planning, and other intellectual support for the vulnerable actresses.
  • The AVAV community will liaise with local media and charitable organizations in Japan to voice the concerns of the affected actresses and uphold their legitimate rights.
  • The AVAV community will organize fundraising activities for the affected actresses.
