This article introduces five onchain games to watch in January 2024. The author, WASD, not only shares the basic information about the games but also mentions their latest developments and upcoming events. These games include Sky Strife, Dark Forest Arena, Tarochi, Force Prime Heroes, and Aether Sands, showcasing the vitality and diversity of the onchain gaming field.

January will be an important month for onchain games, with a large number of new products, updates, events, and game tests launching in the next 30 days.

In this article, I will preview what’s coming by introducing five games I am most looking forward to, so let’s get started!

Sky Strife

Introduction

Sky Strife is a turn-based real-time strategy (RTS) game built by Lattice in MUD.

In Sky Strife, you can participate in PVP matches with 2 to 4 players, aiming to destroy other players' bases while protecting your own from attacks.

Upcoming Developments

Sky Strife is about to begin its next persistent game test (Season 0.1), which will run from January 8 to 30 on the Redstone Holesky testnet.

Although the details of this season's structure have not been officially released, it is likely that, as before, the Lattice team will create free matches multiple times a day during this period.

However, we can be sure that players participating in the aforementioned matches will be able to earn Orbs.

Orbs are ERC-20 tokens awarded as match rewards, which can be used to create games between free matches.

Additionally, users will be able to mint new Season Pass NFTs, allowing their holders access to exclusive matches, maps, and the ability to launch whitelist games.

I had a great time playing Season 0 of Sky Strife, so I can’t wait to play Season 0.1.

Dark Forest Arena

Introduction

Dark Forest Arena is a community event hosted by dfDAO on the Gnosis chain.

Dark Forest is an MMO game where players compete for dominance over a galaxy covered by zk-SNARKs by conquering planets, scoring points, and improving their in-game rankings.

Project Developments

The latest competition launched by Dark Forest is the "speed round," where players aim to capture target planets in the shortest time possible.

This event started on December 31 and will last for two weeks, with the highest-scoring players (i.e., those with the fastest capture times) winning prizes.

I think this is a great way to rekindle user interest in Dark Forest and showcase the game to players like me who were not around during its peak.

I haven’t had a formal attempt to play yet, and while I’m almost certain I won’t win, I still look forward to joining the competition (or should I say, the arena).

Tarochi

Introduction

Tarochi is an onchain RPG game developed by Paima Studios using the Paima engine on XAI.

This game is similar to Pokémon, as players can explore, complete quests, battle, and capture monsters.

Project Developments

Paima plans to hold a test for the latest version of the game (Season 1) in January.

This event will be open to members of their Discord server, so if you haven’t joined yet, you should join Discord. Season 1 will introduce several new features, including PVP battles (currently battles are PVE) and a tradable gold currency.

Additionally, players will be able to trade their game states.

Overall, I am very excited about Season 1 and eager to try out these new features.

I believe that introducing PVP will make battles more engaging, and I am also curious about what the player state trading market will look like.

Force Prime Heroes

Introduction

Force Prime Heroes is a fantasy game built by Force Prime using Dojo and Unity.

The Heroes were created during the recent Dojo Holiday Game Jam hackathon, set in a land called Arcanus, where players are tasked with defeating a creature known as "The Bone Dragon."

To do this, they will collect treasure chests and engage in PVE battles by deploying five different types of creatures, or units.

Project Developments

Although the client is currently available for download on Windows, Force Prime Heroes plans to release a web version soon.

The team will also host a tournament later this month, where players can compete for prizes and influence.

I am not a Windows user, so I haven’t had the chance to try out the heroes yet.

Regardless, I am excited about the upcoming web game and tournament, and I look forward to experiencing this game firsthand for the first time.

Aether Sands

Introduction

Aether Sands is an open-world game developed by k0 Labs using MUD.

The setting of Aether Sands is a post-apocalyptic world where you need to rebuild civilization by planting and defending a tree known as the Temple.

You will accomplish this by extracting and managing resources like water and using machines called Harvesters.

Project Developments

Aether Sands held its first public test last month and will begin its second test in mid-January.

Although the first public test lasted about 24 hours, we don’t know too many details about that test.

But based on what I know about the game, I am looking forward to playing Aether Sands.

It reminds me of Primodium, and open-world games are one of my favorite types in off-chain gaming.

A New Year, A Good Start

As you can see, January will be an exciting and vibrant month for us onchain gamers.

New versions of Sky Strife, Tarochi, Force Prime Heroes, and Aether Sands are on the way, while the Dark Forest Arena is already live and playable!

There will surely be more product launches in the coming weeks. This rapid level of development is not only exciting for all of us but also a super bullish signal for the future of this field.

In summary, it will be a very important year for onchain gaming.
