As an open-source Rollup, Scroll leverages zero-knowledge proofs to enhance speed and reduce costs, ushering in a new era for Ethereum developers.

Scroll Launches Mainnet, Marking a Significant Step in Ethereum Scalability

Community-first open-source Ethereum scaling solution Scroll today announced the launch of its mainnet, marking an important milestone for Ethereum, the world's largest smart contract platform and the first programmable blockchain.

After two years of intensive development and rigorous testing, zero-knowledge (zk) proofs have been used to compress blockchain computations. As Ethereum attracts more users and projects, this increased traffic could slow down network speeds and raise transaction costs. Zero-knowledge proofs provide an innovative way to further accelerate transaction speeds and significantly reduce costs, thereby enhancing Ethereum's scalability.

Scroll's unique bytecode-level, EVM-compatible zkEVM offers an experience almost identical to Ethereum, allowing developers to directly copy, paste, and deploy existing Ethereum projects without needing to modify the code. This development experience fulfills Scroll's commitment to scaling Ethereum without compromising security or decentralization.

Scroll's co-founder Haichen stated, "At Scroll, we place a high value on security. Scroll has a dedicated internal security team that conducts comprehensive audits of our codebase in collaboration with numerous auditing firms, and we have maintained an open-source code status since day one."

The launch of Scroll's mainnet follows over a year of continuous testing, during which more than 55 million transactions were completed on the Alpha and Beta testnets, with nearly 1 million batches of transactions ultimately confirmed on L1. The Beta testnet on Sepolia is the most recent testnet, linking over 900,000 wallet addresses and processing more than 6 million transactions within two months. So far, over 100 projects have been deployed on the Scroll testnet, ranging from infrastructure to DeFi and gaming. The operation of Scroll's mainnet is identical to that of the Sepolia testnet, which will continue to serve as a sandbox development environment for developers.

On Scroll's mainnet, users and developers will enjoy the same experience as Ethereum, backed by zero-knowledge technology. The mainnet will initially be populated by infrastructure providers, followed by support for the deployment of various projects and development tools, enabling developers worldwide to start building Web3 products and ultimately driving new users to join the Ethereum community.

Scroll's co-founder Sandy Peng remarked, "In our foreseeable future, the vast majority of value transfer will occur on Ethereum's L2s. The continuously improving user and developer experience will drive large-scale applications and the adoption of blockchain. We are committed to enabling developers to easily build blockchain applications that anchor real-world applications in Web3, thereby attracting a large number of new users and advancing the community."

Founded in 2021, Scroll's mission is to leverage the native capabilities of zkEVM to build an open-source, scalable ecosystem while maintaining Ethereum's security level and adhering to a commitment to community decentralization. To advance this commitment, the next milestone on Scroll's roadmap is to build a decentralized proof network and a decentralized sequencer.

Over the past two and a half years, Scroll has collaborated with the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) group, contributing approximately 50% of the PSE zkEVM codebase. Since its inception, Scroll has been building an open-source, peer-reviewed, and permissionless project, continuously releasing research reports to promote zero-knowledge proof circuits, cryptography, and hardware acceleration principles, thereby advancing industry development.

About Scroll
Scroll is a zero-knowledge scaling solution for Ethereum, offering lower costs, faster speeds, and unlimited scalability without sacrificing security or decentralization. With bytecode-level compatibility, developing on Scroll is almost the same as developing on Ethereum. From day one, Scroll has been community-centric and open-source. Through zkEVM, Scroll unleashes the powerful capabilities of Web3 while maintaining the same level of security as the Ethereum blockchain.
