In the past few years, Ethereum's Layer 2 networks have seen tremendous growth, particularly with Optimistic Rollups like Arbitrum and Optimism. Value is shifting towards them, but have they grown too large and too fast?
------Bankless Team
Optimistic Rollups have never been for pessimists. Since the beginning of this year, the TVL of Ethereum's two main Optimistic Rollup solutions, Arbitrum and Optimism, has risen by 108% and 52% respectively, which is impressive.
However, despite these benefits, Optimistic Rollups are not the ultimate goal of Ethereum's scalability. While they continue to grow in TVL and help solidify L2 as an indispensable part of the Ethereum ecosystem, the ongoing success of Optimistic Rollups only increases the likelihood of black swan attacks on their core security components.
Today, we will explain why Optimistic Rollups (despite their popularity) remain susceptible to exploitation, explore zero-knowledge solutions to mitigate all these issues, and return to the DAO hack to explain why Ethereum may not simply escape another major vulnerability.
