Nowadays, many blockchain networks are built from the ground up without considering interoperability, leading to severe fragmentation issues among Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks. The DeFi, NFT, and other vertical cryptocurrency activities created based on this fragmented blockchain architecture can only develop in isolated closed environments and cannot interoperate with each other.

To address the issue of poor interoperability between chains, many cross-chain bridges and communication protocols have been designed to quickly and efficiently transfer information and assets in closed environments, theoretically without the need for cross-chain intermediaries and centralized infrastructure.

However, many solutions, while claiming to solve interoperability issues, are not perfect in practice. Products designed based on these solutions can only be said to be theoretically decentralized, as they still rely on new intermediaries that have different vulnerabilities.

To break the current deadlock, Golden Gate (GGX) is developing a cross-chain infrastructure protocol. This protocol has the true efficiency and security capabilities to support large-scale activities, providing unified standards and protection mechanisms for the fragmented Layer 1 and Layer 2 Web3 ecosystem, thereby enabling scalable cross-chain activities.

Understanding Golden Gate (GGX)

Golden Gate (GGX) is an innovative inter-chain infrastructure protocol aimed at solving the problems of communication and liquidity transfer between different chains. Golden Gate provides a protocol-agnostic communication that can eliminate communication friction at Layer 0 and supports communication between mainstream protocol standards, including IBC, XCMP, LayerZero, and others.

Golden Gate (GGX) embeds a hybrid virtual machine into Layer 0, giving it programmable capabilities. Additionally, the protocol orchestrates cross-chain operations through smart contracts and zkSNARKs, achieving efficient inter-chain liquidity synchronization. Golden Gate (GGX) also serves as a relay chain connecting various sub-chains to enhance scalability.

To efficiently conduct cross-chain communication, Golden Gate (GGX) employs a novel Incentivized Message Delivery Protocol (IMDP). This protocol uses a network of couriers running light clients to deliver messages and earns rewards from user fees.

Invoking the smart contracts of Golden Gate (GGX) will trigger the delivery network, which operates as shown in the diagram below:

A core feature of Golden Gate (GGX) is its interoperability with other messaging protocols. By aggregating other messaging protocols with its own, Golden Gate (GGX) facilitates cross-chain liquidity and addresses the liquidity and communication fragmentation issues of blockchain communication standards. Even if other blockchain ecosystems cannot directly connect to the Golden Gate (GGX) relay chain, Golden Gate (GGX) provides scalable usage methods, including:

  • Layer 0 - The Layer 0 protocol involves two participants: oracles and relayers. In a Layer 0-supported environment, the Golden Gate (GGX) blockchain acts as a decentralized oracle, forwarding blocks from the source chain to the target chain. Additionally, Golden Gate (GGX) extends this functionality by notarizing contract states and emitted events to improve efficiency. At this point, the information transmission network acts as a relayer.

  • IBC - The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC) can also be supported by Golden Gate (GGX) when needed. Although any blockchain with smart contracts can implement IBC, the GAS costs in such cases are too high, so large-scale adoption of IBC will still wait for specific elliptic curve-supported EVM readiness. To overcome this issue, Golden Gate (GGX) provides support for the IBC protocol.

  • XCMP - Since using XCMP between two parallel chains requires a shared execution environment (the relay chain), XCMP will only be used when connecting between the two parallel chains of Golden Gate (GGX).

Technical Features

Golden Gate (GGX) employs several technological breakthroughs, including distributed, decentralized, orchestration, and light client synchronization technologies.

To enhance scalability, Golden Gate (GGX) uses a Substrate-based relay chain architecture that can protect connected parallel chains and bridge as many other relay chains as possible, even enabling parallel chain communication between independent relay chain networks.

Golden Gate (GGX) is committed to decentralization, using Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS) to achieve a high Nakamoto coefficient. Under the NPoS mechanism, Golden Gate (GGX) adopts the phregmms algorithm, allowing users to nominate multiple potential validators, thereby distributing stakes as evenly as possible to create a more democratic and decentralized system, giving users a more influential voice.

Golden Gate (GGX) uses an embedded hybrid virtual machine for programming. Utilizing Astar's Cross Virtual Machine (XVM) pallet, Golden Gate (GGX) supports multiple virtual machines, including the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and WebAssembly machine language (WASM). This means developers can write and deploy dApps using Solidity or other languages compiled to WebAssembly (such as Rust and TypeScript).

This makes building on Golden Gate (GGX) much easier, and we anticipate that 300,000 Solidity developers and 30 million WebAssembly developers will have access to the Golden Gate platform, opening doors not only for the cryptocurrency-native technology community but also for developers from a broader community.

Furthermore, by pre-compiling zero-knowledge proof verification into the Golden Gate (GGX) hybrid EVM (especially Groth16 and Plonk), developers can natively support ZK programs on-chain, which is very challenging in the Ethereum environment. Golden Gate (GGX) also utilizes Multi-Party Computation (MPC) to achieve concise and secure cross-chain communication.

The Future of Interoperability

In recent years, numerous interoperability protocols have emerged in the market, attempting to connect isolated blockchain ecosystems with a range of competing protocols. However, the security levels of various chains differ significantly. As a result, we have seen cross-chain protocols repeatedly exploited by hackers, causing massive losses totaling billions of dollars by the end of 2021 and throughout 2022.

Golden Gate (GGX) has learned lessons from the market and has ultimately emerged. The new architecture of Golden Gate (GGX) emphasizes the integration of decentralization, security, and liquidity unification. By addressing these key issues and maintaining backward compatibility with existing solutions, Golden Gate (GGX) is building a future-oriented, secure, and barrier-free cross-chain infrastructure and operational foundation.

Today, Web3 is largely decentralized but also consists of isolated ecosystems, similar to the data transmission networks of the 1960s and 70s. People connected decentralized networks like ARPANET, Stanford, UCLA, and CYCLADES by developing a vast amount of inter-network infrastructure, ultimately forming the internet we are familiar with today. Here, fragmented networks were eventually extracted and connected in a secure and efficient manner, allowing the internet to unite these isolated networks.

Golden Gate (GGX) believes that the fragmented infrastructure of future Web3 will be connected, abstracted just like the previously isolated early internet. The mission of Golden Gate (GGX) is to unify decentralized infrastructure and protect communication and liquidity through higher security standards, decentralization, and composability principles.

About Golden Gate

Golden Gate (GGX) is a cross-chain infrastructure that provides protocol-agnostic cross-chain communication and liquidity routing, with a complete security architecture. Golden Gate (GGX) is delivering the next generation of programmable Layer 0, featuring an embedded hybrid virtual machine and advanced DeFi orchestration capabilities, providing critical infrastructure for the emerging "blockchain internet" of Web3.
