ChainCatcher News: The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has officially sued the founder of the Helix crypto mixer to recover $60 million in civil penalties. In the lawsuit, the DOJ stated that Larry Harmon, who managed the mixer, failed to pay the civil penalties imposed on him for allegedly lax implementation of measures to curb money laundering through the platform. According to the lawsuit, Harmon helped criminals launder money using cryptocurrency while concealing their activities.

In 2020, the U.S. Treasury imposed a fine on Harmon through the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) for allegedly violating the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). According to the department, the defendant operated an unlicensed money transmitting business. In 2021, Harmon pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering conspiracy but has not yet been sentenced.
