As a result, DFINITY has taken the lead in exploring a free, open, and efficient on-chain interaction system focused on privacy rights in the Web3 era—Internet Computer. On the day the IC mainnet officially launched, the DFINITY Foundation also introduced the native authentication framework Internet Identity, corresponding to the underlying cryptographic technology Chain Key of the IC network, as a new paradigm for user privacy protection and identity verification in the decentralized era.

The design of Internet Identity is made possible by the Internet Computer developed by DFINITY. IC is a blockchain computing platform that extends the functionality of the public internet. To avoid the security issues associated with password verification on traditional Web, IC implements appropriate password verification. To simplify the complexity of password verification for users on IC, Internet Identity uses the user's unique identity as a "passcard" to authorize access to applications. Each user's login frontend generates different identifiers that are not tracked, fully ensuring privacy and autonomy. This authentication framework combines Web Authentication (WebAuthn) and IC's proprietary cryptographic technology Chain Key, supported by solid technical foundations.
